2007 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art: Living Utopia and Disaster
October 27, 2007 – January 6, 2008
The 2007 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art: Living Utopia and Disaster features two inter-connected exhibitions, a large group exhibition of the work of 22 Alberta artists produced by the Banff Centre’s Walter Phillips Gallery, the Art Gallery of Alberta, and a survey exhibition to celebrate the work of Alex Janvier organized by the Art Gallery of Calgary.
Heroes and Amateurs
September 26 – October 25, 2007
Originally presented in November of 2006, the Domestic Multiplex series brought video art from around the world to the homes of local residents. Home-screening visits of Heroes and Amateurs were made by appointment and accompanied by the program curator, Joseph del Pesco. Screenings were given in Banff, Canmore, and Calgary.
Informal Architectures
June 22 – September 23, 2007
Informal Architectures is an exhibition gathering the work of a number of artists exploring the intersections of architecture, social thought, and failure. The exhibition presents predominantly new works (some commissioned and produced by artists at The Banff Centre) with select historical works. When viewed together, these works form a narrative about the often unspoken role of architecture in controlling people.
Stand Out
July 19 – September 17, 2007
Stand Out brings together work from the Walter Phillips Gallery's permanent collection that explores the northern landscape as a stage on which the drama of human presence and invention is played out.
18:Beckett
March 31 – May 27, 2007
18:Beckett explores the legacy of the work of Irish writer Samuel Beckett as it appears in the contemporary visual arts. This exhibition concentrates on how contemporary artists have applied methods that Beckett worked with — not so much Beckett plays as “readymades” nor literal re-workings of his work per se, but revitalizations of a number of themes along with an algebraic, austere clarity associable with Beckett’s writing and productions.
PLAN B -Knock
January 18 – March 4, 2007
Knock consists of a series of four performances played out within the flexible setting of a rehearsal room on The Banff Centre campus. Knock has a simple structure, yet its narrative development is slightly absurd and mysteriously left unresolved. Simone Jones and Lance Winn’s projection reproduces its filming, making the experience of the recorded and live viewing inextricably one and the same.
World Upside Down
September 30, 2006 – March 4, 2007
This exhibition explores the strategy of "symbolic inversion" through a broad range of work by fifteen contemporary artists. It examines how ancient traditions with roots in diverse cultures have been critically re-deployed by contemporary artists as a very particular form of social satire.
