Office of Research


The Office of Research oversees research administration at The Banff Centre. The tasks undertaken by the Office of Research include:

  • Developing and overseeing research policies;
  • Assisting members of The Banff Centre community identify research funding opportunities and developing grant applications;
  • Providing assistance with the administration of several committees, including the Research Committee and the Research Ethics Board;
  • Maintaining contact and liaison with research funding organizations;
  • Providing oversight to research facilities;
  • Engaging in partnership opportunities with organizations with an interest in research activities involving The Banff Centre;
  • Ensuring post-award compliance with research funding obligations.

The Office of Research is located in Donald Cameron Centre DCC 3rd Floor and is staffed by the director of research. The director of research reports to the vice-president of programming and works closely with the grants office manager.

 

Internal Funding


The Office of Research facilitates the submission of applications to external granting bodies. To assist in developing proposals for external funding, the Office of Research provides funds through the Research Development Awards program. External Funding


There are a wide variety of organizations that provide funds for research. Many research projects benefit from the three federal granting councils, which have a number of funding programs. It is best to consult their websites directly. The three federal funding councils are:

The federal government provides funding for research infrastructure projects through theCanada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). These tend to be large awards, and The Banff Centre sends out a call for Letters of Intent well in advance of CFI application deadlines. If you are interested in seeking funds from CFI, please consult with the Head of your division, and with the Office of Research, well in advance of application deadlines. The Alberta government also provides a number of funding programs for research projects.

Note: The Banff Centre is an approved service provider for the Alberta Innovates — Technology Futures Alberta Innovates Vouchers program.

Research Policies


All members of the Banff Centre community engaged in research activity must abide by the Research Policies at The Banff Centre. Members of the Banff Centre community are asked to visit this site from time to time to ensure you are aware of the latest research policy documents.

Scholarly Integrity

The Banff Centre Policy on Scholarly Integrity adopts the statement of the three federal granting councils (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR), Tri-Council Policy Statement: Integrity in Research and Scholarship, as the starting point for its policy on scholarly integrity. The Tri-Council statement should be read in conjunction with The Banff Centre Policy on Integrity in Scholarly Activity. All members of The Banff Centre community engaged in research should make themselves aware of the requirements outlined in this policy.

 

Research Ethics


The Banff Centre policy on Ethics in Human Research adopts the statement of the three federal granting councils (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR), Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethics in Human Research, as the starting point for its policy on Ethics in Human Research. Note that the Tri-Councils adopted a revised second edition of the Policy Statement in December 2010. The Tri-Council statement should be read in conjunction with The Banff Centre Policy on Ethics in Human Research. All members of The Banff Centre community engaged in research involving human subjects should make themselves aware of the requirements outlined in this policy.
