Thomas Wharton was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, and lived in Jasper for several years before moving to Edmonton to complete a B.A. and M.A. in English at the University of Alberta. He completed a Ph.D. in English at the University of Calgary in 1998, and now lives in Edmonton with his family. His first novel, Icefields (NeWest 1995), won numerous awards, including the Commonwealth Writer's Prize for Best First Book, Canada and Caribbean Regions.
