Helen Fogwill Porter was born and
grew up in St. John's, Newfoundland, where she still lives. She has
been writing professionally for thirty-five years and has published
across Canada and overseas. She writes fiction, non-fiction, poetry,
humour, drama, and criticism. Most of Porter's work is set in St.
John's; she is keenly interested in regional speech.
Porter is completing her second novel, Finishing School. Her
first poetry collection, Blood and Water, is now with her
publisher, Breakwater Books. Porter's published books include Below
the Bridge (Breakwater Books 1980), January, February, June
or July (Breakwater Books 1988) and A Long and Lonely Ride
(Breakwater Books 1991). January, February, June or July was
shortlisted for the W. H. Smith/Books in Canada First Novel Award in
1989 and won the Young Adult Canadian Book Award, presented by the
Canadian Library Association.
