Ally McKay attended the Writing Studio (1983) under the direction of W.O. Mitchell, and later participated in the May Writing Studio (1985 and 1986). "The Storms Are On The Ocean" formed part of her collection Human Bones (Oberon Press 1988 and was re-issued in the Canadian Library Series (HarperCollins 1990). McKay has fond memories of Banff, volleyball, the smell of snuff, the bagpipe send-off, and the stag-in-a-snowstorm story, as told by W.O. and Alistair MacLeod.
