Thomas DeFrantz earned degrees from Yale, the City University of New York, and the Department of Performance Studies at New York University. He is Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and coordinates the dance history program at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York City. His current writing projects include a book-length exploration of Alvin Ailey's choreography, titled Revelations: Alvin Ailey's Embodiment of African American Culture, and the anthology Dancing Many Drums: Excavations in African American Dance History. Also a performer and choreographer, DeFrantz recently choreographed the Ossie Davis play Paul Robeson, All-American for Theatreworks/USA and the burlesque musical Pure PolyEsther for Boston's Theatre Offensive, and performed the Morton Gould Tap Dance Concerto with the Boston Pops, conducted by Keith Lockhart.
