Kent Gunnufson: Buffalo at Grand Geyser

Kent Gunnufson: Buffalo at Grand Geyser

“They say there is no such thing as luck, only persistence and being prepared for that chance of a lifetime. On skis, I set my tripod on the snow-covered wood hand-railed-walkway spanning the stream overlooking Old Grand. The early morning light was flat from cloud cover and I began shooting a landscape with my Rollei SL66 just as the geyser began to erupt. Then I looked up to see a buffalo standing at the edge of the bridge. Initially I thought the shoot was over and had to move since there wasn't room for the both of us. That's when the buffalo decided to walk around the bridge. Though my 50mm lens made him look distant, he wasn't more than 20 feet in front of me. As he went across, the sun broke out. I didn't notice the catch light in the eye of the buffalo until after developing a print.”

Kent Gunnufson is an award-winning photographer and video producer. He has been photographing the high country since the 70s, resulting in Summit County's first fine-art landscape book, Tracking the Snowshoe Itinerant. Kent has been acknowledged in California Art Review, reviewed in The Denver Post, featured in Popular Photography, Los Angeles Times, and Denver, Confluence of the Arts. Currently, Kent is a volunteer, setting up an annual exhibition of environmental photography to be held in conjunction with the Colorado Environmental Film Festival at the American Mountaineering Center. Kent's upcoming feature documentary, Life at 10,000 Feet, will feature his photography in telling the stories of those working and living at Colorado ski resorts.
