Project Title: Framework and Performance for Immersive Audio Space

Dates: February 19 – March 1, 2006

Frame work and Performance for Immersive Audio Space is a project that aims to develop an audio interaction framework for people working with sound, ranging from performing musicians to users of tele-presence systems. The proposed framework can be compared to computer-based animation systems, often at the heart of computer games and simulators. These kinds of systems rely on three-dimensional (3D) computer models to render their image content. In computer –generated movies, a ‘story’ is modeled.  Pertinent objects, characters, and scenes are specified in 3D model; they interact as the model is rendered from one moment to the next. In this way, the computer model is like a theatre ‘set’ where action takes place. This interactive framework provides the user with a ’set’ (audiovisual environment) or performance space where their choice of audio file manipulates, changes, and directly effects the visualization created within the virtual space.

Jeremy Cooperstock is a professor of electrical and computer engineering in Toronto. He is a member of the Centre for Intelligent Machines, an associate member of the Faculty of Music, and a co-founding member of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music, Media, and Technology at McGill University. His expertise is in human–computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and network communication protocols.

Collaborator Jack Settle’s interest in the use of technology in music production/performance brought him to Paris in 1986 with a Fulbright Scholarship for computer music at the Institute for Research and Coordination of Acoustics and Music (IRCAM) headed by Pierre Boulez. He now lives in Montreal, where he was a professor at McGill University and currently composes full time.
