At the audience welcome reception on Sunday evening, competition director Barry Shiffman presented a stripped-down version of the Esterházy Castle in the lobby of the Eric Harvie Theatre.

The Banff Centre’s version, limited by current budgetary constraints, reflects the chamber mnusic salon in the castle of composer Joseph Haydn’s patrons, the House of Esterházy.

The first ad-hoc quartet to perform a movement from Haydn

Barry presented the castle as an opportunity for audience members to form ad hoc quartets and perform music by Haydn. A group from the audience — none of whom knew each other — rose to the challenge. “I told my friends, before I die, I want to play in a string quartet,” said violinist Monika Schaefer of Jasper. She got her chance at the Esterházy Castle
