Songs Above the Treeline CD

Aboriginal Arts at The Banff Centre is pleased to launch the first CD as part of the Diverse As This Land program.

The nature of land and the diversity within Indigenous cultures is the inspiration behind Diverse As This Land, a seven-year music program at Aboriginal Arts, The Banff Centre. Diverse As This Land explores how land shapes and informs vocal and cultural expression. It reveals the spectrum of Indigenous music, representing rock, folk, traditional, and contemporary music genres, all influenced by their distinct cultures.

Songs Above the Treeline were the inaugural sold-out concerts of this innovative seven-year vision by director Sandra Laronde of Aboriginal Arts at The Banff Centre. Songs Above the Treeline celebrates the rarely heard sounds, sights, and talents of five of Canada’s most accomplished Inuit and Dene women artists who are from the north — “above the treeline.”

These concerts featured the remarkable talents of award-winning artists Tanya Tagaq, Leela Gilday, Lucie Idlout, and throat singers Becky Kilabuk and Kendra Tagoona. The Songs Above the Treeline concerts were performed and recorded live in the Rolston Recital Hall at The Banff Centre. At the end of the seven-year project, Aboriginal Arts will also produce “the best of” in one outstanding CD compilation, aptly named Diverse As This Land.

This inaugural Songs Above the Treeline CD is a result of what happens when the treeline meets the mountains, and when a slice of the north visits the south.

The Songs Above the Treeline CD is now available for purchase! The cost is $20 plus $5 for shipping and taxes.

Proceeds from the sale of the CD will go directly into a scholarship fund for Aboriginal artists to attend programming at The Banff Centre.
